The AMA mermaids account for a very important and traditional portion of Japanese culture. Since ancient times these women would free dive into the Pacific charged with the task of retrieving seaweed, shellfish, and sometimes pearls!
AMA literally translates to ‘Women of the Sea,’ which is completely fitting, as women were always the preferred divers in Japan. Due to their naturally higher body fat percentage, it was believed that they would be more insulated and effective while diving in the cooler coastal waters.
Up until recently, the AMA dove completely naked! The thought that clothes would hinder the ability to dive, and swim quickly, kept them to wearing solely loin cloths. Don’t believe, check the photos below!
